Chapel Window Monolithos Rhodes: Finding Peace in Small Sacred Spaces

It was quite an adjustment for my eyes to enter this small chapel on the cliffs at Monolithos. Outside, the summer light was strong, bouncing off whitewashed walls, contrasted with the dim but peaceful interior.

I love these wonderful Orthodox chapels – they’re so peaceful, like many of the old English churches abundant here in my home in Somerset, but much more colorful and opulent inside.

As I enjoyed the serenity, I was drawn to this little window which housed a small picture, a wooden cross, and for some strange reason, a small rock.

There’s something profound about these tiny details that catch your attention in sacred spaces. The mystery of that small rock – was it placed there intentionally? A prayer stone? A child’s offering? Or just something that found its way there over time?

These moments remind me why I’m drawn to photograph not just the grand vistas, but the intimate details that tell deeper stories. Sometimes the smallest windows hold the biggest mysteries.

The contrast between Somerset’s ancient churches and Greek Orthodox chapels fascinates me – different traditions, same human need for sacred quiet spaces.
