Moored Between The Palms

Nothing inspires me to get out of bed in the middle of the night with my camera more than traveling to a new place and exploring it.

I’ve been to Mallorca (Majorca) several times but had never fully explored the north of the island in the Alcudia area. Alcudia is known for its amazing beach, beautiful old town, and it’s also home to the Roman city of Pollentia and the smallest Roman amphitheater in Spain.

My trip was for four days, and I had a desire to capture images of Alcudia beach with its palm trees and wooden jetties extending into the shallow sea. I didn’t want to shoot blue-sky summer pictures; I wanted to capture the soft tones of the dawn light illuminating the distant mountains and subtle colors reflecting in the calm sea.

Sunrise was at 6:55 am, and I wanted to set up and capture some images before the sun hit the horizon. I arrived at my planned spot in plenty of time and proceeded to compose my camera and capture some frames.

During summer hours, I’m used to having locations to myself at dawn, even in well-known spots like Venice and Rome. However, I didn’t consider the later hour of sunrise or that there were several beachfront hotels close by. The beach was slowly starting to fill with runners, dog walkers, and a few tourists enjoying the dawn light and getting in my frame!

Experience has taught me that when these things happen, it’s best to go with the flow, as it can often lead to unexpectedly better images. I knew with enough frames and my extensive retouching experience, I could retouch any people out if I decided I didn’t want them in the final image.

The morning’s shoot was fairly brief, but I left feeling very rewarded with both my planned images and a few that had turned up unexpectedly. The serene landscape, with its ethereal glow, was perfect for creating beautiful coastal wall decor. The soft dawn light added a rustic texture to the beach scene, making it ideal for photography wall art and beautiful scenery posters.
