Golden Dawn Argassi Bridge & Boat: When Greece Looks Like the Caribbean

This was another view I captured at the amazing 19th-century Venetian bridge on Argassi Beach in Zakynthos. My first shot showcased the incredible rustic bridge within the seascape, but with this image, I wanted to show its relationship to the coastline.

I was initially drawn, as often is the case, to morning light breaking through palm trees and especially this small wooden boat lying on the beach. It certainly didn’t cry out “Greece” – initially looked like a scene from some Caribbean island.

Having said that, where else would you find a 19th-century Venetian bridge gracefully sitting in the sea?

This captures exactly why I’m drawn to Greek photography – these unexpected moments when familiar Mediterranean beauty surprises you with something completely different. One moment you’re photographing ancient ruins, the next you’re capturing what could be a tropical paradise.

The contrast between the weathered wooden boat, swaying palms, and that distinctive Venetian stonework creates visual tension that makes the image more compelling than any single element alone.

It’s no wonder Greece has remained such a big part of my life, especially through a camera lens. Just when you think you understand this country, it reveals another face entirely.

This is why I keep returning – Greece constantly surprises, even after 37 years behind the lens.
