How My Vespa Obsession Led to This Shot (And Why I Dread Day Trips)

Summer 2006, day trip to Kalymnos with my wife. I love exploring new Greek islands, but there’s always that slight dread – I just know I’m going to discover some amazing location I want to shoot with no control over my schedule.

Can’t return later when the light transforms everything. Can’t come back at dawn. You can’t have it all on organized trips, but some places get bookmarked for future adventures.

This shot near the harbor caught my attention for personal reasons. I’ve been riding and customizing classic Italian Vespas and Lambrettas since I was 16 – it’s actually how I got into photography. So seeing this old small-frame Vespa definitely stopped me in my tracks.

But it wasn’t just nostalgia. The color harmony between the scooter, that blue basket waiting to be filled, and the matching Aegean Sea was perfect. I imagined it parked there, waiting for a fisherman to return with freshly caught octopus for the rear rack.

Sometimes harsh summer light gets dismissed, but here it worked beautifully – sharpening and boosting those incredible Greek blue hues that make the Mediterranean so distinctive.
