Not stock. Not AI. One photographer, 37 years, sharing his personal vision through the moments and stories behind every image.

The Rialto Bridge, Venice, at the Edge of Darkness. Two women chatting beneath the bridge as night fell under the warm glow of Venetian street lamps. A routine they probably repeated most evenings. Normal life in an uncommonly beautiful place. 37 years.

EVENING CATCH UP UNDER RIALTO BRIDGE

BACKSTORY

EVENING CATCH UP UNDER RIALTO BRIDGE

Venice is notorious for being tricky to navigate. It took my wife and me a fair while to find our hotel, and we were slightly concerned about going out later and getting lost in the dark. No Google Maps back in 2005.

After firmly locating our hotel in relation to St Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge, we felt happier about not being lost in the back streets for an eternity.

This was one of two images I captured that evening from the Rialto Bridge. It was my favorite time to shoot—what I call the Edge of Darkness.

It’s a fleeting moment when it’s neither day nor night, but something in between. The last breath of sun reflects softly in the sky while the artificial light of the city begins to glow warmly. You get maybe ten minutes of this magic, and if you’re not paying attention, you miss it entirely.

I spotted these two women chatting under the bridge as night fell, illuminated by the warm glow of Venetian street lamps.

I wondered what they were talking about in this scene—probably something they did most evenings, no different to the way we catch up with friends or neighbors after work.

Normal life in a uniquely beautiful place on earth.

What’s The Difference Between A Canvas And A Limited Edition Print?

  • The canvas prints are open edition — there is no limit on how many can be made.
  • The limited edition prints are on Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper — a heavy cotton paper made to archival standards — with a strict edition cap (5, 10 or 15 depending on size).
  • When an edition sells out, it is closed for good. Some photographs are offered in both formats and some in one only. The difference is the material, the edition limit, and what that means for long-term ownership.
