Not stock. Not AI. One photographer, 37 years, sharing his personal vision through the moments and stories behind every image.

Mandraki Harbour, Rhodes — where the Colossus of Rhodes is said to have stood. A memory I carried from my early 20s, island hopping and waiting for a ferry at dawn. Returned decades later to capture my version of it. 37 years. Published by National Geographic and TIME Magazine.

BACKSTORY

Where a Wonder of the World Once Stood

It’s not every day you find yourself standing where one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World may once have risen. Here, at Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes, many believe the great Colossus of Rhodes — a towering bronze statue said to rival the height of today’s Statue of Liberty — could have stood, guarding the entrance to the city.

Though the Colossus collapsed more than 2,000 years ago, the sense of awe it must have inspired still lingers. Today, stone columns topped with deer mark the spot, their calm silhouettes watching over fishing boats, ferries, and sleek yachts that glide in and out.

On the morning I captured this image, the sun rose quietly behind St. Nicholas Fortress. The sea turned to glass, painted in soft apricot and lavender tones. It was a moment of stillness, and for a brief while, I could imagine how ancient mariners must have felt arriving here after long voyages — a mix of relief, reverence, and wonder.

That’s the thing about places like this: even when the physical monument has disappeared, the spirit of it remains. The harbour, the fortress, the statues — they whisper reminders that time moves on, but human awe endures.

For me, standing here isn’t just about photographing a beautiful sunrise. It’s about connecting with centuries of human experience. The quiet resilience of the stones, the measured light of dawn, the sense of scale that humbles your own worries — all of it works together to create calm perspective.

This is exactly why many collectors hang these pieces in their homes or workspaces. They aren’t just images of Greece; they become anchors of calm, perspective, and timeless wonder in the midst of busy lives.

The Colossus may be gone, and its true location still debated, but perhaps the real wonder is how its story continues to make us pause, reflect, and breathe a little deeper.

What’s The Difference Between A Canvas And A Limited Edition Print?

The canvas prints are open edition — produced on artist-grade cotton canvas with archival pigment inks. There is no limit on how many can be made. The limited edition prints are on Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper — a heavy cotton paper used in museum collections — with a strict edition cap. When the edition sells out, the image is permanently retired. Both use the same photographs. The difference is the material, the edition limit, and what that means for long-term ownership.
